‘Grinch’ arrested for shoplifting while police hold toy drive

DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WPRI) – A shoplifting suspect didn’t get far Saturday after trying to steal items from a Target while police officers were holding a toy drive outside.

“Probably not the wisest decision,” said Dartmouth Police Detective Kyle Costa about the alleged Christmas crook’s timing.

The Dartmouth Police Department was holding its annual Christmas toy drive outside the store all day and filled two buses with donated toys. But at some point Saturday, while the event was underway, Target employees alerted police to a man they believed had shoplifted from the store.

“He had several different items that valued about $120,” said Costa. “He just didn’t choose the right day to do it.”

Police arrested the man, 42 year-old Patrick Machado of Acushnet, and charged him with shoplifting by concealing merchandise. And that’s not all — Costa said the arresting officer was decked out for the holidays.

“The shoplifter happened to be taken into custody by one of our guys who was wearing a Santa Claus hat with his uniform,” said Costa. “In keeping in the spirit of the holiday he kept his hat on throughout the entire process.

“Santa just placed someone on the naughty list,” the department wrote on its Facebook page.
