Ithaca Commons shooting suspect ID’d, in jail without bail on attempted murder charge

ITHACA, N.Y. — Ithaca police have released the name of the man charged with attempted murder in an early Sunday morning shooting on the Ithaca Commons.

Yakez Cornett, 22, of Ithaca, was charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, Ithaca police spokesman Jamie Williamson said.

Cornett was arraigned on the charges in Ithaca City Court. Judge Scott Miller sent Cornett to the Tompkins County Jail without bail.

Cornett is accused of shooting another man in the 200 block of East State Street at 1:24 a.m. Sunday, Williamson said.

Ithaca police were alerted of the shooting after gunshots rang out.

Emergency responders found a man who had been shot in the back and leg outside Silky Jones Bar on The Commons. Cornett is accused of shooting the man after an argument, police have said.

Bangs Ambulance took the victim to a hospital, where he was in serious but stable condition Sunday.

Police say they found Cornett near the intersection of Cayuga and East State streets, where he was carrying a handgun and ammunition. The Ithaca Police Department is not yet releasing the suspect’s mugshot, Williamson said.

Ithaca police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call dispatch at 607-272-324.
