Leaf-Chronicle puts an end to daily gallery of arrest mugshots

In 2011, The Leaf-Chronicle began collecting and publishing, in an easy-to-access format, booking mugshots from the Montgomery County Jail. It was part of a national trend among journalism websites, and it built a lot of excitement as another way to drive online readership and engagement.

These mugshots have been available to the public on the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office website since 2005. But The Leaf-Chronicle was able to republish them in a manner that would make them easier to click through, packaging them with other crime news in a one-stop location at TheLeafChronicle.com.

It was a service to readers we were glad to provide, and it proved quite popular.

Six years is a lifetime in digital years, and during that time, a lot has changed:

Police to arrest 10 people in LSU fraternity pledge’s death

Ten people will be arrested on hazing charges in the death of a Louisiana State University fraternity pledge after a night of drinking, LSU officials said Wednesday.

One of the 10 suspects, Matthew Alexander Naquin, also faces a negligent homicide charge in the death last month of 18-year-old Maxwell Gruver, a freshman from Roswell, Georgia, LSU said in a statement.

Eight of the suspects are LSU students and were active members of the fraternity, according to university spokesman Ernie Ballard. He said all 10 are expected to be jailed Wednesday once they turn themselves in to LSU police.

“The LSU Police Department has communicated with the Gruver family throughout the investigation process, and the university has also been in touch with them regarding today’s arrests,” LSU’s statement says.

Gruver died at a Baton Rouge hospital on Sept. 14 after Phi Delta Theta members found him lying on a couch at the fraternity house and couldn’t tell if he was breathing, police said.

A coroner said hospital tests found a “highly elevated” blood-alcohol level in Gruver’s body.

Witnesses told police that the fraternity’s pledges were forced to drink to excess on the night before Gruver’s

Utah officer fired after nurse’s arrest caught on video

A Utah police officer was fired Tuesday after being seen on video roughly handcuffing a nurse because she refused to allow a blood draw in an incident that became a flashpoint in the national conversation about use of force.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown made the decision to fire Detective Jeff Payne after an internal investigation found he violated department policies when he arrested nurse Alex Wubbels and dragged her screaming from the hospital, department spokesman Sgt. Brandon Shearer said.

Brown said in a disciplinary letter that he was “deeply troubled” by Payne’s conduct, which he described as “inappropriate, unreasonable, unwarranted, discourteous, disrespectful” and said brought “significant disrepute” on the department.

“You demonstrated extremely poor professional judgment (especially for an officer with 27 years of experience), which calls into question your ability to effectively serve the public and the department,” Brown wrote.

Attorney Greg Skordas, who represents Payne, said his client plans to appeal a firing he considers unfair and over the top. Skordas said Payne would still be employed if the body camera footage hadn’t generated so much attention and blown the events out of proportion.

Payne’s supervisor, Lt. James Tracy, was demoted

Young Thug was busted for drug possession over the weekend and remains locked up four days after. If you take a look at his mug shot, which was just released by TMZ today, you can see the face of a man who, at the very least, is no longer a fan of tinted windows.

As per a report that we published yesterday (September 26th), the Atlanta rapper was picked up on Saturday in Brookhaven,Georgia by members of the Brookhaven Police Department. He was booked on one count of marijuana possession. In addition to a felony drug charge that he’s now facing, he’s also being written up for having tinted front windows on the vehicle he was driving at the time. This isn’t the first time Young Thug has been on the receiving end of drug possession charges. Back in 2015, similar bookings were made by the charges were ultimately dropped after the raid on his home was done illegally by police.
