Utah officer fired after nurse’s arrest caught on video

A Utah police officer was fired Tuesday after being seen on video roughly handcuffing a nurse because she refused to allow a blood draw in an incident that became a flashpoint in the national conversation about use of force.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown made the decision to fire Detective Jeff Payne after an internal investigation found he violated department policies when he arrested nurse Alex Wubbels and dragged her screaming from the hospital, department spokesman Sgt. Brandon Shearer said.

Brown said in a disciplinary letter that he was “deeply troubled” by Payne’s conduct, which he described as “inappropriate, unreasonable, unwarranted, discourteous, disrespectful” and said brought “significant disrepute” on the department.

“You demonstrated extremely poor professional judgment (especially for an officer with 27 years of experience), which calls into question your ability to effectively serve the public and the department,” Brown wrote.

Attorney Greg Skordas, who represents Payne, said his client plans to appeal a firing he considers unfair and over the top. Skordas said Payne would still be employed if the body camera footage hadn’t generated so much attention and blown the events out of proportion.

Payne’s supervisor, Lt. James Tracy, was demoted

Artie Lange says he was fired from ‘Crashing’ after drug arrest

Following his recent arrest for possession of heroin and cocaine, Artie Lange says he has been fired from HBO’s “Crashing.”

“Since this HBO show ‘Crashing’ premiered, which I just got fired from — I might go to jail,” he admitted to “Len Berman Todd Schnitt in the Morning” on Thursday. “I’ve had a lot of success and a lot of happy times, but when I do the failure stuff … that’s all TMZ wants to talk about, and they get it out there and I lose my job. That’s what happens. [‘Crashing’] was the one time critics actually liked what I did. Well, that’s the last time you’ll see it.”

But the network says otherwise.

“HBO has not fired Artie Lange. ‘Crashing’ has completed production for season one and has been recently renewed for a second season. Scripts for season two have not yet been written,” read a statement to Page Six.

Just days after the three Oregon players were released from hospitalization due to overexertion during workouts, there’s more bad news for Willie Taggart’s Ducks program.

According to the school, co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach David Reaves was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in Eugene on Saturday night.

“Reaves has been placed on administrative leave and the process to terminate his employment with cause has commenced,” the school announced. “The University has high standards for the conduct of employees and is addressing this matter with the utmost seriousness.”

Reaves had been at USF with Taggart since 2013, serving as the associate head coach in 2016. Earlier in his career, Reaves was at South Carolina from 2002-08 under both Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier where he served as an offensive assistant and recruiting coordinator. Reaves is also the former brother-in-law of Lane Kiffin.
