Three men face animal cruelty charges in shark-dragging video case

Nearly five months after video surfaced on social media of a shark being dragged by a speeding boat, three men are facing animal abuse charges as a result of the investigation sparked by public outrage.

Robert Lee “Bo” Benac, 28, Michael Wenzel, 21, and Spencer Heintz, 23, have each been charged with two counts of aggravated animal cruelty, a third-degree felony, according to a press release from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on Tuesday. Benac and Wenzel also face one count of illegal method of take of a shark, a second-degree misdemeanor.

Charges have been filed by the State Attorney’s Office in Hillsborough County, not in Manatee. In October, State Attorney Ed Brodsky announced that both offices would be investigating as “many of these incidents occurred in Hillsborough,” he said.

“The State Attorney’s Office is committed to holding these men accountable for having engaged in such senseless and unjustifiable animal cruelty,” 13th Judicial Circuit State Attorney Andrew H. Warren said in a press release. “We thank the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for their work in investigating these crimes, and we stand with them, along with Florida’s fishing and hunting communities, and all those who

Utah officer fired after nurse’s arrest caught on video

A Utah police officer was fired Tuesday after being seen on video roughly handcuffing a nurse because she refused to allow a blood draw in an incident that became a flashpoint in the national conversation about use of force.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown made the decision to fire Detective Jeff Payne after an internal investigation found he violated department policies when he arrested nurse Alex Wubbels and dragged her screaming from the hospital, department spokesman Sgt. Brandon Shearer said.

Brown said in a disciplinary letter that he was “deeply troubled” by Payne’s conduct, which he described as “inappropriate, unreasonable, unwarranted, discourteous, disrespectful” and said brought “significant disrepute” on the department.

“You demonstrated extremely poor professional judgment (especially for an officer with 27 years of experience), which calls into question your ability to effectively serve the public and the department,” Brown wrote.

Attorney Greg Skordas, who represents Payne, said his client plans to appeal a firing he considers unfair and over the top. Skordas said Payne would still be employed if the body camera footage hadn’t generated so much attention and blown the events out of proportion.

Payne’s supervisor, Lt. James Tracy, was demoted

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said a responding deputy smelled alcohol coming from the car and saw an unrestrained 3-year-old in the backseat when he pulled Lerma over.

When an officer had Lerma do a sobriety test, she is seen in the video stumbling to the side after she was asked to follow his pen with her eyes.

After she was instructed to walk down a white line and failed, the 31-year-old admitted she had a couple shots of Fireball, a brand of cinnamon whiskey. Lerma took two breathalyzer tests in which she blew a .200 and a .187, according to WPEC. The legal blood alcohol level limit in Florida is .08.

Lerma was then arrested, and when she was placed in the backseat of the police cruiser, the 31-year-old then began a verbal tirade.
